My newest experiment in gardening – Mushrooms

I love mushrooms.  All kinds.  All shapes.  So when this really interesting catalog called Fungi Perfecti showed up in my mailbox, I was immediately intrigued.  Basically, it sells products made with mushrooms and mushrooms spores for growing your own.  There are several kinds to grow indoors, which is nice for the winter and several to grow outdoors.

Today, I ordered three kinds: Shiitake, Enokitake and Pioppino.  They like temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees so indoors in the winter will be perfect.  The Shiitakes grow in a sawdust block and the other two grow in plastic bags with wood chips and sawdust.

You can take the left over growth materials and put them outside and you get additional crops.  Turns out they are good to grow directly in with your vegetables.  The mushrooms have a symbiotic relationship with dirt and enhance the growth of the vegetables.  Makes sense since I have bought and incorporated mushroom dirt in my gardens for years.  I’m looking forward to having several crops and trying out new recipes.

The URL for the company is http://www.fungi.com.  I’ll post back here periodically with pictures to show how my mushroom experiment goes over the winter.  I can’t wait.

Ciao y’all.
